Search Engine Rankings Ideas for Photographers and Artists.

The idea is to get a lot of attention to your site. That will relate to SEO Rankings, indexing and grow exponentially in the potential visitors to your site. Below there are many ideas that can help create a 'buzz' around your site and the content. The more people that link to your site, the higher the Search Engines will rank you.

1. Create a Blog / Newsletter / Newspage:

Your Blog can focus on:

  • cool events in the studio
  • events in the community
  • events in the region
  • national events
  • personal insights
  • personal thanks and "kudos"
  • all of the above

Newsletter could focus on:

  • techniques
  • industry changes
  • art direction / design and mix with Photography
  • combinations of above

Newspage could focus on:

  • studio and local events
  • new clients / projects
  • personal projects
  • new studio acquisitions
  • new studio personnel
  • thanks to AD"s and Designers
Don Giannatti is a photographer and designer working in Phoenix, AZ. He shoots still life, women and weddings. You can see his work at www.steelid.com and www.dongiannatti.com

2. Create 'niche' Websites for content and ranking positioning and complementary rankings as well.

For instance, if you do Still Life, Portraiture and Fine Art, you can create three additional sites to the main site. If you have a main site name the additional sites with as many keywords as possible. My site is www.dongiannatti.com. It features my commercial work as well as the non-traditional wedding stuff I do. I also have www.steelid.com, www.arizonaweddingphotographer.com, and have created (but not launched at this writing) three more sites: one developed for writing about art / music / photography - a blog || a site for teaching lighting and photography || and a site developed specifically for marketing items to self-starting entrepreneurs. These sites will all link to one another and create a wide and diverse set of sites that will benefit each other in the rankings review.

These are small sites. They will be at least 5 pages. Five pages is an important number. These cannot be single pages with lists of keywords or links. Google sees that type of page as either a link farm or a "spam" page and you may lose ranking points because of it.

We recommend a home page with copy talking about your specialty, as my dongiannatti-wedding-photography.com site does. The home page has four paragraphs of copy describing my work as well as a photograph and a simple "news" item. We update it monthly. I have a "portfolio" of wedding photographs and a page that lists my services and fees, an about me page with links to friends, resources and, of course, my other sites, and a contact page with my e-mail address.

Home | Portfolio | Services | About | News | Contact | Links (optional)

We also ask if folks want to be notified when we add new images or pages. And we notify them when the content changes.

This is the "template" we use for the other sites as well. All link to my main page as well as each other. All contain a "news" item that is updated monthly. The sites are so inexpensive to host these days and the benefits so great that it is one of my main strategies.

3. Join as many community sites as possible.
I have joined several sites for photographers in the glamour photography niche. I belong to OMP (OneModelPlace.com), GarageGlamour.com, AzPhotoBook.com, AmericanPhotoBook.com, FredMiranda.com and many more. There are several of these "community" sites out there. You have to dig, but you can find them.

4. Pay for listing on Yahoo (about $300 per year), Inktomi (about $30 per year) and others that you can find out there. Google and the other search engines rely heavily on these directories and the directories carr y much "weight" when it comes to ranking and popularity.

5. Link to as many of your friends as you can (possibly in similar specialties, but in other geographic regions, or maybe freelance AD"s and Designers you have worked with), as long as they will link to you as well. These reciprocal links will add to your popularity. We are hoping, of course, that your friends have optimized their sites and have achieved at least some popularity.

6. Make sure your sites are as optimized as possible. (check back December 1. 2003 for a primier on site optimization for photographers and artists.)

7. Join and participate in forums. Being active means your name is out there every day or week. You have lots of knowledge to share. Share it and get known for what you have to offer.

8. Write and Publish small to medium papers and books (E-books are fantastic ways to get your self known to the OnLine World. Finding other sites to give away or sell your books (also known as Affiliate Marketing is a great source of additional income, as well as a fantastic way to have your site linked from sites that are very popular which benefits your site rankings as well.

In short, there are many ways to help get your site known to the Search Engines and possible clients. We are hoping you have optimized your site as best you can, but you can see there are so many possibilities for additional linking and popularity rankings that simply doing Optimization may not be enough.
