Prodigitalimage.com: Put a gradient in your selection
Putting a
gradient in the selection gives a gradual transition to the adjustment
within the selection. For this lesson we will make a selection
and put a gradient within the selection, so that the image will
gradually get darker from the foreground to background. Make a
selection around the dark canyon. Feather the selection (select
/ feather, try 10 pixels). Save the selection, and title it "dark
canyon"
.

Click on
the channel palette ( if not visible: window / show channels).
Next click on the selection that was saved, (dark canyon). The
white area is the feathered selection that you just made
.
Next, choose
the "linear gradient tool" from the toolbar, and make sure the
"foreground color" on the toolbar is white. Click and drag from
the bottom of the "dark canyon" selection to the top of the selection.
Your screen should look like this.
Next, click
on the small box at the bottom left of the channel palette. This
will load the gradient in the selection.
Next, Click
on the 'RGB" channel in the channel palette. This brings the image
back to the screen.
Finally,
adjust the dark canyon with a curves adjustment. (image / adjust
/ curves).
